2. PEKKA HYYTIÄINEN RETROSPEKTIIVI
Elokuvakerho Montaasi järjestää Pekka Hyytiäisen elokuvien retrospektiivin Kino
Tapiolassa 17. ja 24.3.2014. Tapahtuma koostuu kahdesta näytöksestä, joissa
esitetään Hyytiäisen kaikki kolme pitkää elokuvaa sekä runsaasti ennen
näkemätöntä materiaalia hänen uransa varrelta. Hyytiäisen ystävät ja
yhteistyökumppanit tulevat paikalle kertomaan elokuvien tekemisestä.
Hyytiäinen (1950–2008) on suomalaisen elokuvan unohdettu luonnonlahjakkuus ja
yksi niitä harvoja kotimaisia 1970- ja 80-lukujen
independent-elokuvantekijöitä, jotka onnistuivat murtautumaan
harrastajapohjalta valtavirtaan.
elokuvia. Lähikuvan ensimmäinen tuotanto, jännityselokuva Kirje, valmistui
1978. Sitä seurasi muutamaa vuotta myöhemmin i + i (1981), tinkimättömän synkkä
"elokuva epäonnistumisesta". Hyytiäisen kolmas elokuva, sodan pelkoa käsittelevä
MP – minä pelkään (1982), jäi lopulta hänen viimeisekseen, vaikka tässä
vaiheessa hän oli kiinnittänyt maan merkittävimpien elokuvakriitikoiden
huomion: "Hyytiäinen on taikurimaisella tavalla kääntänyt kaupallisen elokuvan
keinot päälaelleen", kirjoitti Helena Ylänen (HS 27.3.1982), ja Sakari
Toiviainen (IS 26.3.1982) totesi Hyytiäisen olevan "suomalaisessa elokuvassa …
muotisuuntausten".
Lyhyen uransa aikana Hyytiäinen ehti kehittyä yhdeksi kotimaisen elokuvan
omintakeisimmista ohjaajista, mutta hänen tuotantonsa huonon saatavuuden vuoksi
hänen osuutensa Suomen elokuvahistoriassa on jäänyt pitkälti huomioimatta.
Hyytiäisen nimi nousi uudelleen esiin syksyllä 2012 Night Visions -festivaalin
yhteydessä pidetyn MP:n 30-vuotisjuhlanäytöksen myötä, mutta hänen muita
elokuviaan ei ole esitetty ensi-iltakierrosten jälkeen. Kohti pimeää: Pekka
Hyytiäisen elokuvat korjaa puutteen tarjoamalla laajan katsauksen Hyytiäisen
tuotantoon.

Shine on You, Eevaliisa
Shine On You, Eevaliisa (2014) on kolmesta fiktiivisestä videoteoksesta muodostuva teoskokonaisuus.

VILKE COLLECTION (short intro)
The VILKE Collection of Finnish electronic art founded by FixC Cooperative comes into being on a celebratory year. In 2013 it has been 50 years since the exhibition Exposition of Music – Electronic Television (11.3 – 20.3.1963) by the “Pope” of video art Nam June Paik.
The objective of the VILKE Collection is to bring together works that were central in their time, works in which the idea, structure or action is essentially linked to the applied technology. Consumer electronics and high technology used by industry together with obsolete technology buried in the sands of time are wired into our lives and memories in ways that electronic artworks utilise, vary and bring to life from a new perspective. The VILKE Collection reinstates many of these works of art that have fallen outside museum collections and the official canon of Finnish art history.
One of the first video installations in the history of Finnish electronic art is Philip van Knorring’s Bevakat (“watched” or “under surveillance” in Swedish) from 1977, a statement about public camera surveillance, indicating how artists were interested in considering the social and political effects of new technology. The beginning of the 1980s saw the bloom of a new mode of making which was characterised by the use of different kinds of small-scale industrial communication devices. In the 1990s the new generation was interested in the phenomenological aspects of time and space and social situations. Many of VILKE artists worked also in the collective of Helsinki Film Workshop, founded in 1989. The artists share the same ethos as the alternative musicians working at the same time. Jimi Tenor shot in 1995 an experimental documentary on 16 mm film about the artists of record company Sähkö (“electricity”), a company founded by Tommi Grönlund. The tone of the film is similar to an ethnological film: attentive and respectful of the work being done.
Both the pioneering strategies of the early internet culture and the newer "post-internet" mentality are presented in the collection. Juha van Ingen’s Web Safe Colourscape (1999–2000) is one of the few Finnish works that uses an internet browser as a central piece of the work. In Vantaa (2007), Erkka Nissinen creates a particular and unique post-internet aesthetics of his own. Demoscene group MFX’s work Cannapaceus (2008) is a rich computer animation that is processed in real-time.
If the abstract epic lyricism of Cannapaceus nearly propels the viewer to another planet, Laura Könönen’s The Only One and All (2011) transports the onlooker far into the history of our home planet. Könönen’s work is comprised of a record player and a rotating record made of granite, the principal stone type of Finnish bedrock, which is traced with a diamond needle. The voice of the stone is dusty and discontinuous, speaking from experience far older than the technology that is used to play the sound for us to hear.
The inclusion of electronic and media art into the praxis of making art has created new challenges to preserving art. An internationally adapted strategy is to “update” works to a new technological standard at specific intervals, for instance every ten years. However, many works are media specific, made with a specific device of a specific period. Digitalising an analogical video, for example, can change the nature of the work radically. The works in the VILKE Collection are not only preserved in accordance to digital standards, the intention is to exhibit them in their original presentation form whenever possible.
The collections of private collectors, institutions, museums, organisations and foundations form an important part of cultural memory, and the public display of collected works makes it possible for a larger audience to get to experience them. The works in VILKE Collection remain in the artists’ possession, but they can deposited with museums for an appointed period of time. With the creation of the VILKE Collection, FixC Cooperative is turning a new page in preserving and exhibiting Finnish electronic art's history.
The exhibition includes also five brand new 50-channel monitor works (which will be shown during the exhibition one by one in 50-monitor structure build for this purpose) by FixC artists Maria Duncker, Juha van Ingen, Seppo Renvall, Jarkko Räsänen and Kari Yli-Annala

LIVE CINEMA (AAVE FESTIVAL 2012)
One of our festival’s spesific missions is to bring moving images and live performances together. This year that mission is back, stronger than ever. We want to demonstrate that the potential of live cinema is vaster than the possibilities of standard cinema live soundtrack.

OLIVER WHITEHEAD
’am I you’ on live cinema -projisointi taiteilijan ja keinoälyteknologiaa käyttävän online-keskusteluohjelman välillä. Teoksen kuvat reagoivat tekstiin ja esille nouseviin kysymyksiin ja vastauksiin.
Whitehead oli Kuvataideakatemian tila-aika –taiteiden osaston ensimmäinen johtaja vv. 1991 – 1997 ja vuonna 2000 hänen videoteoksensa Mind´s Eye (1999) sai ZKM / SWR:n (Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie / Südwestrundfunk) jakaman kansainvälisen mediataiteen palkinnon. Viime aikoina hän on luonut erityisiä live-cinema -projisointeja musiikkiesityksiä varten ja on kiertänyt yhdessä suomalaisen You/Me -ryhmän (Asko Keränen ja Marjatta Oja) kanssa.
OLIVER WHITEHEAD
fri 13.4.2012, Juhlasali, 21:00
Oliver Whitehead (b. 1947 in GB) has lived and worked in Helsinki, Finland since 1971. He works with many different media including film, video, photography, drawings, printmaking and installations. As an artist his multidisciplinary production and many-sided approach to art defies reductive categorizations. n AAVE Whitehead will perform two live cinema -performances with sound of approximately 20 minutes each. ’men-ace’ is a live video projection performance with sound. Using images that are soothing but at the same time menacing, the artist references images and the visual seduction of violence with immersive sounds. ’am I you’ is a live cinema projection between the artist and an online AI (Artificial Intelligence) conversation program. The images will respond to the text, questions and answers.
Whitehead was the first director of the department of
Time and Space –arts in the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts during the years 1991-97 and in 2000 he got the 1st international prize in the category of video for his work Mind´s Eye (1999), given by ZKM/SWR (Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie / Südwestrundfunk). Recently he has been creating specific live-cinema projections for bands and has toured with the Finnish group You/Me (Asko Keränen ja Marjatta Oja).
MIA MÄKELÄ JA TERO VÄNTTINEN
su 15.4.2012, Malmisali, 17:00
I-FILES
Eteenpäin soljuva islantilaista luontoa ilmentävä kuvavirta, jokaisen rajauksen muistuttaessa elävää maisemamaalausta jatkuvassa, viskoosinomaisessa havaitsevassa hetkessä.
MIA MÄKELÄ
Mia Mäkelä työskentelee reaaliaikaisen audiovisuaalisen performanssin, kokeellisen videon ja dokumentaarisen ilmaisun kentillä. Hänen työtään on kuvailtu “kuvien tummaksi houreeksi, kompleksisen maailman hajautetuksi visioksi - William Blaken runouden digitaaliseksi versioksi”.
sun 15.4.2012, Malmisali, 17:00
I-FILES
A flowing stream of images depict Icelandic nature, each frame resemble a living landscape painting in a continuous, viscous perceptive moment.
MIA MÄKELÄ
Mia Mäkelä works in the fields of real-time audiovisual performance, experimental video and documentary. Her work has been described as “A dark delirium of images, a disintegrated vision on a complex world – a digital version of William Blake’s poetry”. Her style ranges from minimal abstractions to multilayered compositions following a dreamlike narrative audiovisual journey. M (2011) was a generative visuals set for Mia Zabelka´s audio release M. The performance Kaamos Trilogy (2007-09) was a fairytale about illumination and the figure of a guru, a homage to Andrei Tarkovsky. Nine (IX) (2008) was a performance with Kate Pendry and Hildur Guddnadottir, presenting 9 oracles following the tradition of female role as the foreseer in the ancient Greece. Live soundtrack was made by Miguel Marin (Arbol). Her latest works includes Green Matters (2011), which is a scientific art project, an exploration of the possibilities of the use of green algae in the Baltic Sea.
TERO VÄNTTINEN
Musical accompaniment is realised by Tero Vänttinen who is previously known as the cleaning robot CW04 from Cleaning Women and as the singer-guitarist Olavi Vänttinen from the band Kometa. Soundscapes are created from acoustic sounds, which are recorded live, processed and looped onto digital layers. These soundscapes alternate with mostly improvised live sections, which are played with an electric guitar, one bass guitar string and percussions.
ASPEC(T) FEAT. 70FPS
maailmaa: Jerome Noetinger, Dave Phillips, Mike Cooper, Valerio Tricoli, Jack Wright, Franck Vigroux, Ignaz Schick, Eugene Chadbourne, Arnaud Riviere, Mario De Vega, Psychofagist ja Cris X. Heidän uusimman CD:nsä “Abattoir” on julkaissut ranskalainen levy-yhtiö Nuun Records.
70FPS
Andrea Saggiomo aka 70fps asuu Napolissa.

ASPEC(T) FEAT. 70FPS
sun 15.4.2012, Juhlasali, 20:00
Coming from deep south of Europe Aspec(t) feat 70fps will perform in AAVE festival a trip/experiment of “listening of a vision”. Super 8 films manipulated live, light devices, electroacoustic systems of feedback, tapes, everything connected to generate a single body that goes beyond the audio-visual identities. The super8 projector, the film and the image are used as instruments to produce and modify the light in real time. The image on the film is a filter or a tool to manipulate the light, not to reproduce images. Also mirrors and prisms are used. Musical instruments are used in an improper way: sax generates feedback, tape recorder is physically played as a traditional instrument; resonance effects are produced with the other machines on stage, just where the system is weaker and more instable.
ASPEC(T)
Aspec(t) are SEC_ and Mario Gabola from Naples, Italy. Together or separately they have played with musicians from all over the world (Jerome Noetinger, Dave Phillips, Mike Cooper, Valerio Tricoli, Jack Wright, Franck Vigroux, Ignaz Schick, Eugene Chadbourne, Arnaud Riviere, Mario De Vega, Psychofagist, Cris X...). Their new CD “Abattoir” has just been released by the French label Nuun Records.
70FPS
Andrea Saggiomo aka 70fps live in Naples. In 2007 he founded his own theater company. His last show “Villon: il romanzo del peto del diavolo” made his debut in Napoli in November 2011. Since 2010 he has collaborated with Altera! festival. The project 70 fps comes from the theatrical practice, expanding into interaction with other artists and musicians beyond the theater world.

su 15.4.2012, Juhlasali, 21:00
Kokeellisen elektroniikan seura on joukko kokeellisen elektroniikan rakastajia jotka kuitenkin suhtautuvat skeptisesti nykyiseen elektroniikan massatuotantoon ja kulutukseen. Koelse on kiertänyt maailman taidekeskuksia, gallerioita, jättömaita ja vallattuja taloja vuodesta 2002. Seura rakentaa installaatioita, konsertoi ja järjestää työpajoja. Tämän vuoden AAVE festareilla Vallilan saasta-alkemistit antavat yleisölle mahdollisuuden todistaa olion syntymän, joka saa pohtimaan; pullahtaako kuvainnollisesta elektroniikkakohdusta pelkät jälkeiset vai peräti elämää?

ANIMAL PARTY (OPENING EVENT) Thursday, 12.4.2012
17.30 OPENING STARTS
18.00 BURIED FOREST (UMOREGI), directed by Kohei Oguri
2005 / 93min / 35mm
"Buried Forest on Ogurin aikaisempien elokuvien tapaan yritys herättää uudelleen kykymme olla vuorovaikutuksessa kuvien kanssa. (...) Kaikkialla rikkaissa säteilevissä kuvissa on pieniä tarinoita ja Oguri antaa niiden kaikkien esiintulolle aikaa. Hän antaa otosten jäädä paikalleen liikuttaen kameraa minimaalisesti. (...) Jotkut elokuvat voi summata muutamilla sanoilla - itse asiassa, niiden kertominen niin vähillä sanoilla kuin mahdollista on tullut laadun takeeksi esimerkiksi Hollywoodissa. Buried Forestin kaltaisten elokuvien kuvailuun eivät taas mitkään sanat riitä, koska sanat edustavat juuri sitä mistä nämä elokuvat eivät kerro."
"The Buried Forest, like Oguri's previous films, is an attempt to reawaken our capacity to interact with images. (...) There are little stories everywhere in the rich, radiant images of The Buried Forest, and Oguri gives us the time to find and read them all. He holds his shots and makes minimal use of the moving camera. (...) Some films can be summed up in words - in fact, doing this in as few as possible has become the benchmark of quality for the aforementioned Hollywood model of filmmaking. For others, like The Buried Forest, no amount of words can suffice, because words are exactly what they are not about. "
