VILKE COLLECTION (short intro)

The VILKE Collection of Finnish electronic art founded by FixC Cooperative comes into being on a celebratory year. In 2013 it has been 50 years since the exhibition Exposition of Music – Electronic Television (11.3 – 20.3.1963) by the “Pope” of video art Nam June Paik.

The objective of the VILKE Collection is to bring together works that were central in their time, works in which the idea, structure or action is essentially linked to the applied technology. Consumer electronics and high technology used by industry together with obsolete technology buried in the sands of time are wired into our lives and memories in ways that electronic artworks utilise, vary and bring to life from a new perspective. The VILKE Collection reinstates many of these works of art that have fallen outside museum collections and the official canon of Finnish art history.

One of the first video installations in the history of Finnish electronic art is Philip van Knorring’s Bevakat (“watched” or “under surveillance” in Swedish) from 1977, a statement about public camera surveillance, indicating how artists were interested in considering the social and political effects of new technology. The beginning of the 1980s saw the bloom of a new mode of making which was characterised by the use of different kinds of small-scale industrial communication devices. In the 1990s the new generation was interested in the phenomenological aspects of time and space and social situations. Many of VILKE artists worked also in the collective of Helsinki Film Workshop, founded in 1989. The artists share the same ethos as the alternative musicians working at the same time. Jimi Tenor shot in 1995 an experimental documentary on 16 mm film about the artists of record company Sähkö (“electricity”), a company founded by Tommi Grönlund. The tone of the film is similar to an ethnological film: attentive and respectful of the work being done.

Both the pioneering strategies of the early internet culture and the newer "post-internet" mentality are presented in the collection. Juha van Ingen’s Web Safe Colourscape (1999–2000) is one of the few Finnish works that uses an internet browser as a central piece of the work. In Vantaa (2007), Erkka Nissinen creates a particular and unique post-internet aesthetics of his own. Demoscene group MFX’s work Cannapaceus (2008) is a rich computer animation that is processed in real-time.

If the abstract epic lyricism of Cannapaceus nearly propels the viewer to another planet, Laura Könönen’s The Only One and All (2011) transports the onlooker far into the history of our home planet. Könönen’s work is comprised of a record player and a rotating record made of granite, the principal stone type of Finnish bedrock, which is traced with a diamond needle. The voice of the stone is dusty and discontinuous, speaking from experience far older than the technology that is used to play the sound for us to hear.

The inclusion of electronic and media art into the praxis of making art has created new challenges to preserving art. An internationally adapted strategy is to “update” works to a new technological standard at specific intervals, for instance every ten years. However, many works are media specific, made with a specific device of a specific period. Digitalising an analogical video, for example, can change the nature of the work radically. The works in the VILKE Collection are not only preserved in accordance to digital standards, the intention is to exhibit them in their original presentation form whenever possible.

The collections of private collectors, institutions, museums, organisations and foundations form an important part of cultural memory, and the public display of collected works makes it possible for a larger audience to get to experience them. The works in VILKE Collection remain in the artists’ possession, but they can deposited with museums for an appointed period of time. With the creation of the VILKE Collection, FixC Cooperative is turning a new page in preserving and exhibiting Finnish electronic art's history.

The exhibition includes also five brand new 50-channel monitor works (which will be shown during the exhibition one by one in 50-monitor structure build for this purpose) by FixC artists Maria Duncker, Juha van Ingen, Seppo Renvall, Jarkko Räsänen and Kari Yli-Annala

KUTSU TAIDEKOULU MAAN JÄRJESTÄMÄÄN SCREENINGIIN
“KAUPALLISTA"

perjantaina 24.5.2013 klo 18.00 Jätkäsaaren L3 -makasiinissa, Tyynenmerenkatu 6, 4 krs. Taidekoulu MAAn lopputyönäyttelyn Aut of Okus -yhteydessä (Paikalle pääsee helposti raitiovaunu 9:llä)

– Laozi (500-luku e.a.a)

"Vedellä on oltava markkina-arvo muiden elintarvikkeiden tapaan."

Taidekoulu MAAn liikkuvan kuvan perjantaipajan opetus on lukuvuonna 2012-13 käsitellyt mm. videokameraa kamerakynänä, eri mediumeja filmistä videoon, itserakennettuja laitteita sekä kaupallisuuden kysymystä taiteessa.

......................
Taidekoulu MAAn liikkuvan kuvan perjantaipajan opetuksen syksy 2012 – kevät 2013 on koordinoinut Kokeellisten taiteiden nomadisen akatemian Kari Yli-Annala (syksyn 2012 koordinointiparinaan Sanna Sarva) ja sen vierailevina opettajina ovat olleet mm. Pekka Uotila, Hannu Kärenlampi, Milja Viita, Veli Granö, Jani Ruscica, Kalle Hamm, Kimmo Vänttinen, Sami van Ingen ja Tuula Närhinen. Kevään 2013 opetus päättyi Seppo Renvallin pitämään nelipäiväiseen filmipohjaisen tekemisen työpajaan ja joitain näytöksessä mukana olevia teoksia on työstetty myös keväällä järjestetyllä Gun Holmströmin videokurssilla.

PARACINEMATIC ENCOUNTERS -SEMINAR / AAVE 2013

AAVE - ALTERNATIVE AUDIOVISUAL EVENT ESITTÄÄ:
PARACINEMATIC ENCOUNTERS -SEMINAARI JA LAURA MINICI ZOTTIN LUENTOPERFORMANSSI KUVATAIDEAKATEMIASSA

Perjantaina 12.4.2013
Klo 12:00 Bruce McClure (US), Sami van Ingen (FI) & Marek Pluciennik (PL/CA/FI)
Klo 14:30 Laura Minici Zotti (IT)

Perjantaina Kuvataideakatemiassa pidettävässä seminaarissa järjestämme kaksi sessiota, joista ensimmäisessä taiteilijat Bruce McClure, Sami van Ingen ja Marek Pluciennik puhuvat taiteestaan ja käyttämästään tekniikasta. Toisessa sessiossa Padovassa sijaitsevan Museo del Precineman johtaja Laura Minici Zotti pitää luentoperformanssin, jossa rekonstruoidaan taikalyhtyesitys Charles Dickensin matkasta Italiassa.

SESSION I: PARAELOKUVALLISIA KOHTAAMISIA
(Presentaatiot ja paneelikeskustelu)

Esittelemme kolme elokuvaperformanssien tekijää, jotka kertovat työstään. Heitä voisi luonnehtia myös "paraelokuvan", elokuvan materiaalisen ilmenemisen laajentamisen taitajiksi. Mitä on paraelokuva?

LAURA MINICI ZOTTI
Laura Minici Zotti on vuodesta 1975 lähtien toiminut Padovan Museo del precineman johtajana.

MUSEO DEL PRECINEMA
Padovassa sijaitseva Museo del precinema, esielokuvallisten esityslaitteiden museo on perustettu vuonna 1998 Palazzo Angeliin, 1400-luvun rakennukseen Prato della Vallessa.

AAVE - ALTERNATIVE AUDIOVISUAL EVENT PRESENTS:
SEMINAR AT FINNISH ACADEMY OF FINE ARTS

Friday 12.4.2013
12:00 Bruce McClure (US), Sami van Ingen (FI) & Marek Pluciennik (PL/CA/FI)
14:30 Laura Minici Zotti (IT)

On Friday a seminar in two parts will be held at the Academy of Fine Arts. In the first session artists Bruce McClure, Sami van Ingen and Marek Pluciennik will discuss their work and methods in a panel discussion. Laura Minici Zotti, the director of Museo del precinema in Padua will then have a lecture performance where she reconstructs a Laterna Magica show about Charles Dickens’ travel to Italy.

SESSION I: PARACINEMATIC ENCOUNTERS
(Presentations and a panel discussion)

We introduce three artists who make film performances, treating the celluloid film "live". They could be seen as practioners of paracinema, a practice of expanding the material expression in cinema. What is paracinema? We open the concept a bit, and ask about it also from the filmmakers.

BRUCE MCCLURE
Bruce McClure is a Brooklyn-based experimental filmmaker, a moving-image magician, who uses specially-modified 16mm projectors, film loops and guitar effects pedals in his astonishing performances. McClure manipulates the projectors, light, and sound creating a flickering environ- ment filled with a minimal pulsating beat, which is as much sound as image.

SAMI VAN INGEN
Sami van Ingen ́s works have been screened in many national and international festivals and venues. one of the main characteristics of his work is an examination of the cinematic apparatus itself and the boundaries within it. His collaborators include filmmakers Philip Hoffman and Bruce Baillie, as well as composer Petri Kuljuntausta. van Ingen ́s artist ́s book “Moving shadows” was published by the Finnish academy of Fine Arts in 2012 as part of his doctoral dissertation.

MAREK PLUCIENNIK
Marek Pluciennik is a film and video artist. His preoccupations are projection time, haptic visuality, film materiality, intuition. He has developed a projection film performance in which he melts film while projecting it. In 2010 he joined forces with sound artist James Andean to form Plucié/DesAndes. His films and video have been screened in Images Film Festival in Toronto, International Short Film Festival in Tampere, as well as contemporary art galleries in Poland, Sweden, Hungary and Finland.

Venue: Auditorium, Finnish Academy of Fine Arts, Kaikukatu 4

SESSION II : LAURA MINICI ZOTTI

LAURA MINICI ZOTTI
Since 1975, Laura Minici Zotti, director of the Museum and also skilled “lanternist”, has spread the knowledge of precinema throughout the world giving her magic lantern shows. In 2008 she received the prestigious international Jean Mitry prize at the Silent Film Festival of Pordenone for her constant cultural service and dissemination of the knowledge of Precinema. In 2010 she recived the Premio Donna Eccelente for culture and recently the Premio Vittorio De Sica.

MUSEO DEL PRECINEMA
The Museum of PRECINEMA, founded in 1998, is based in the Palazzo Angeli, a 15th Century building in Prato della Valle, in the centre of the historic city of Padua. The Museum preserves and displays the optical instruments and original hand-painted magic lantern slides, dating back to the 18th and 19th Centuries. Alongside simple devices there are also more complicated instruments like the pheneakistoscope, praxinoscope zoetrope and magic lanterns of many different kinds. Finally, there are a is also a Javanese shadow theatre dating from the end of the 19th Century and a camera obscura.

AAVE OPENING IN MALMITALO 11.4

SAMI VAN INGEN: HATE
12 minutes, 35mm film. Cinemascope (1:2.35), silent. Premiered at UnionDocs, New
York, June 2012.

In 1959, Soviet film director Aleksandr Ptushko (1900 - 1973) directed a feature film titled Sampo, which was loosely based on the F
innish national epic Kalevala and which was in part filmed with two cameras simultaneously. In Hate a stereoscopic image is appropriated from Sampo to form "a happening" between two different perspectives and intended to play with the possibility of exposing the hidden landscape of the mythical Kalevala. The implications of portraying "the Other" in Ptushko´s depiction of Kalevala is also exposed. The
stroboscopic effect of the film contrasts with the pictorial content that follows traditional narrative lines: the abduction of the fair maiden, the events lead to a disgraced and defensive suitor, who, once defeated, exits the set sulking.

FRIEZE FILM TOURING PROGRAMME
(Some of you have seen this programme in BLINKITY-BLINK)
THU 11.4.2013, Juhlasali, 18:00

Apichatpong Weerasethakul: The Anthem (2006, 5min)
The Thai ritual of playing the royal anthem before a feature film presentation in order to honour the king was the point of departure for Weerasethakul’s 35mm film. This ceremonial procedure is one of hundreds that take place on a daily basis in Thailand. The Anthem (2006) was conceived as a blessing, to take place at the beginning of each screening.

Shahryar Nashat: Quad (2010, 11min)
Shahryar Nashat’s new video continues his desire-inflected dialogue with the art of artists Nairy Baghramian, Julian Göthe, Hilary Lloyd and Luigi Ontani.

Stephen Sutcliffe: Writer in Residence (2010, 5min)
Sutcliffe poses the melancholic hallucination that is Adrian Leverkühn’s meeting with the Devil in Thomas Mann’s Doctor Faustus (1947) in direct counterpoint to the conversation by Colin Wilson in his book The Outsider (1956). Sutcliffe returns to his characteristic theme of (artistic) self-doubt with prognoses, remedies and worst-case scenarios.

Elizabeth Price: The Tent (2010, 9min)
Every aspect of the video has been extorted from the book Systems (1972), a catalogue of an exhibition by artists associated with the eponymous 1970s British group: Richard Allen, John Ernest, Malcolm Hughes, Colin Jones, Michael Kidner, Peter Lowe, James Moyes, David Saunders, Geoffrey Smedley, Jean Spencer, Jeffrey Steel and Gillian Wise Ciobotaru.

Linder: Forgetful Green (2010 21min)
“Like every work I make, my new film Forgetful Green is taken from a location defined by John Bunyan in The Pilgrim’s Progress (1678) as “the most dangerous place in all these parts.” Bunyan describes the tale as being “delivered under the similitude of a dream,” and my early arrival at a rose field in Colchester in mid-July, directly after my 13-hour performance The Darktown Cakewalk: Celebrated from the House of FAME (2010), seemed wholly dreamlike…”

Jess Flood-Paddock: Island – A Regime (2010 3 min)
Island, A Regime is a new video work filmed on a mobile phone. The non-linear narrative tone throughout aims to create a mood associated with travelling and observing. The unseen traveller and watcher who is also the video-maker, is an implied presence – a private and secretive observer who records ‘the sites’. The work attempts to provide a counterpoint to the often laborious process of filmmaking – involving tripods, grips and re-takes – by focusing on idleness, leisure and simple means

Wilhelm Sasnal: Europa (2007, 3min)
Originally made on 16mm –film, Europa is an inherently structuralist film which contents are part defined by its prescribed three-minute duration. The first half of the film comprises a series of descriptions of its material properties and where it was produced, how the rest of film will be structured and when the soundtrack will start.

Bonnie Camplin: Special Afflictions by Roy Harryhozen (2006, 5min) Inspired by Jack Cardiff’s British horror movie The Mutations (1970), in which a crackpot scientist attempts to fuse humans with strains of plant life, Camplin’s film describes a quintessentially British drawing-room play in which a group of fairground performers have each been inflicted with a cinematic special effect.

Miguel Calderón: Guest of Honour (2006, 6min)
Guest of Honor follows a family one Sunday afternoon as they head into the woods for a picnic; befriending a young deer on their excursion, the family enjoy and encourage the new addition to their party until the animal’s overactive bowel movements put an unpleasant end to their rural outing.
