The music for this film was Dimitri Shostakovich’s first attempt at the kitsch-heroic style 
already being tried in Hollywood. 
The result is one of the most varied, colourful and over-the-top of all his film-scores. (...)
This is music in glorious orchestral technicolour, designed to make the audience jump out of their seats. 
It is scored for lavish forces, including an organ, two harps and the plangent and ridiculously slithery sound 
of a Hawaiian guitar. The fugue (movement 3 of the Suite) for organ and orchestra is perhaps the most remarkable passage, 
an intensely dense tapestry of sound, almost in the manner of Charles Ives.

Leningrad avantgarde
FACTORY OF ECCENTRICITY (FEKS) existed in Petrograd (Leningrad) in 1922-26 close to the ideas of the Leftist Arts Front, V. E. Meyerhold and V. V. Mayakovsky. Some theories of the Russian formal school influenced the stylistic conceptions and theories of FEKS. In 1922, founding members F. G. M. Kozintsev, L. Z. Trauberg, G. K. Kryzhitsky and S. I. Yutkevich published the manifesto Eccentricity. In the workshop of the Factory of Eccentricity (the Factory of the Eccentric Actor, opened in July 1922) new methods of education based on the development of physical abilities of the actors (...), acrobatics, dances and juggling. FEKS publicised "the lowest" art forms: music hall, circus, show, while appealing for the electrification and mechanization of theatrical productions. FEKS turned to the cinema in workshop in the cinema hall Sevzapkino (today the Leningrad Film) in 1923. Kozintsev and Trauberg produced six films with their permanent staff of actors. Dynamic Earth explores the inner workings of Earth’s climate system. With visualizations based on satellite monitoring data and advanced supercomputer simulations, this cutting-edge procuction follows a trail of rnergy that flows from the Sun into the interlocking systems that shape our climate: the atmosphere, oceans, and the biosphere.
Kilpisjärvellä (Finland, 2012, 17 min, dir Axel Straschnoy, prod. Mark Lwoff, Misha Jaari / Buf0)
Kilpisjärvellä presents the Northern Lights as they are experienced by someone watching them from the ground. We follow two cameramen who are working to record them on video as they walk through the tundra in order to get away from any artificial lights, and they look for the best spot to capture them. We experience the simple issues of their everyday life, such as getting water from under the ice, chopping wood or preparing a meal. Finally, we also see the lights themselves.
Director Axel Straschnoy will be present at the screenings.
