AAVE FESTIVAL ESITTÄÄ: EN GARDE!

En Garde -sarjamme esittelee teoksia, jotka rikkovat rohkeasti audiovisuaalisten teosten tavanomaisimpia rajoja. Turner-palkitun, “instagram-sukupolven” digitaalista kuvakerrontaa installaatioissaan ilmentävän 35-vuotiaan Laure Prouvostin pitkä elokuva The Wanderer (2013) aloittaa festivaalimme screeningohjelman. Näytämme sen yhdessä kahden hänen videoteoksensa kanssa.

The video is of a self-proclaimed ‘curator of artist’s video works’ explaining what he sees as the role and function of video art, quoting Walter Benjamin along the way. His speech, though, is spliced and reworded so as to become almost incomprehensible. There are distracting jump-cuts to people in pools and farm animals, while the voiceover is humorously mis-subtitled.

2. IT, HEAT, HIT (2010, 06:00)
​It, Heat, Hit propels a story where the images of a swimming frog or snowy street scene are followed by statements of love and implied violence. The mood of the film gradually becomes darker and more unsettling.

3. THE WANDERER (The Directors Cut) (2013, 75:00)
“When I double speak, laughing and vomiting by the swing-bridge, then my language exits through a trapdoor.” Laure Prouvost’s feature film The Wanderer is based on a text by artist Rory Macbeth, who translated a Kafka novella from German into English without any knowledge of the German language and without a dictionary. On the way between languages, the original narrative is transformed, if not lost, in translation.

AAVE FESTIVAL PRESENTS: EN GARDE!

Our En Garde -screenings present new audacious works, which break the usual borders. The works by Laure Prouvost, 35 year old Turner Prize -winner “who combines digital imagery for the ´Instagram generation´ with atmospheric installations”, will begin our screening program. We show her feature-length film The Wanderer (2013) and two of her video art works. In this year AAVE will also screen moving image works by the Polish painter and filmmaker Wilhelm Sasnal as a prelude to his visit in Helsinki, hopefully in 2015.

Tervetuloa näyttelyn avajaisiin maanantaina 7.4. klo 18 alkaen! Näyttely on avoinna päivittäin klo 12-18.

Kirsi Reinolan Yleisradiolle tekemä 6-osainen tv-dokumenttisarja suomalaisista mediataiteilijoista esitetään installaatiomuotoisena AAVE-festivaalin aikana Helsingin Lasipalatsissa (Entinen Kirjan tila, vasemmalla Bio Rexistä). Sarja esittelee mediataiteen eri tekniikoita, tyylisuuntauksia ja aikakausia edustavia suomalaisia taiteilijoita ja heidän teoksiaan. Vaikeaksi miellettyä taiteenlajia lähestytään kansantajuisesti ja huumorilla. Jaksot sisältävät joko kokonaisia teoksia tai klippejä ja dokumentaatioita teoksista. Sarjan pääpaino on mediataiteen teoksissa, ja taiteilijat taustoittavat haastatteluissa taidettaan ja ajatuksiaan mediataiteesta yleisemmin.

Sarjassa nähdään taitelijiat työnsä äärellä, esimerkiksi Anssi Kasitonni kuvaamassa uutta avaruusmusikaaliansa Kuhmalahden työväentalolla, Mika Taanila rakentamassa ja ajamassa Expanded Pori -live-esitystä lukuisine projektoreineen ja Marjatta Oja tekemässä projisointikokeiluja työhuoneellaan teokseensa Personally Imposed. Welcome to the exhibition opening on Monday, 7th April, starting at 6 p.m.! Doors are open everyday from noon to 6pm.

Kirsi Reinola`s six-part TV documentary series for YLE about Finnish media artists is presented as an installation during the festival at Lasipalatsi in Helsinki next to Bio Rex. The series presents a variety of the different technologies, styles and eras of media art approached with common sense and humour. Episodes include either the whole works or clips and documentation for the works. The main focus is in the art works and the artists thoughts about media art in general. The series shows, for instance, Anssi Kasitonni filming his space musical at Kuhmalahti Workers' Hall, Mika Taanila running the Expanded Pori live performance with numerous projectors and Marjatta Oja experimenting projections in her studio.

All the artists in the series are:

The fifth alternative audiovisual arts festival AAVE (Finnish for ghost) appears again in event venues around Helsinki during the second week of April. One of our main program highlights in Malmitalo cultural centre is the video opera An Index of Metals by Fausto Romitelli and Paolo Pachini, co-produced and performed by Sibelius Academy's NYKY Ensemble. The performance combines opera singing, chamber orchestra, electronic music and video art.

Kirsi Reinola's six-part TV documentary series about Finnish media artists will be presented as an installation at Helsinki's Lasipalatsi. The festival also takes over the area of Lasipalatsi square and spreads around the city: Night of The Beamers is a participatory public event where Helsinki residents can participate with their own video projections. Other night-time events including VJ sessions will spread around downtown at Mbar, the National Theatre's Lavaklubi, as well as Bar Sandro in Kallio.

Frans Tihveräisen Kaupunkiverstaalla pitämässä työpajassa perehdytään augmented realityyn (AR) eli lisättyyn todellisuuteen. Työpajassa käydään lyhyesti läpi AR-historiaa, kehitysvaiheita ja erilaisia käyttötarkoituksia. Vapaa pääsy! Työpaja pidetään suomeksi.

Mitä AR sitten on? Pähkinänkuoressa se on todellisuuden täydentämistä digitaalisen lisäsisällön avulla. AR-keinoin on mahdollista liittää mm. painettuun sisältöön monenlaisia digitaalisia lisämausteita. Työpajassa tutustutaan useisiin kyseisen teknologian toteutuksiin, ideoidaan ja lopuksi toteutetaan oma AR-projekti itsenäisesti tai pareittain. Paras työpajassa toteutettu AR-pläjäys palkitaan leffalipuin. Frans Tihveräinen on lisättyyn todellisuuteen hurahtanut yrittäjä, valokuvaaja, digimediainsinööri ja kahden pikkupojan isä.

Käytännön tekemiseen keskittyvä osuus, jossa toteutetaan oma AR-toteutus alusta loppuun. Ensin ideoidaan ja suunnitellaan, sitten toteutetaan ja lopuksi katsomme kaikkien AR-toteutukset ja valitaan hauskin. Hauskimmalle toteutukselle luvassa leffaliput!

Varma kevään merkki on kansainvälinen AAVE-festivaali. Täysin ilmainen audiovisuaalinen tapahtuma järjestetään huhtikuun toisella viikolla. AAVE on enemmän kuin elokuvafestivaali. Se näyttää liikkuvien kuvien sateenkaaren kaikissa väreissään ja sävyissään. Esitämme niin kertovia elokuvia, videotaidetta kuin liikkuvan kuvan ja performanssin yhdistelmiä. Päätapahtumapaikkana toimii Malmitalon kulttuurikeskus (Ala-Malmin tori 1, Helsinki). Oheistapahtumia järjestetään mm. Kansallisteatterin Lavaklubilla, Lasipalatsin pop-up näyttelytilassa (entinen Kirja kerrallaan), Mbarissa ja Bar Sandrossa.

Kaupunkiverstas
Helsingin kaupunginkirjaston Kaupunkiverstas on toiminnan tyyssija, jonne kuka tahansa voi tulla toteuttamaan pienet ja suuret ideansa. Onko sinulla mielessä mahtava esine, jota ei vain vielä oikeasti ole olemassa? Tai pieni mutta tärkeä parannus johonkin tarve-esineeseen? Entä haluaisitko valmistaa itse suunnittelemasi tarran tai kangaspainatuksen? Lasipalatsin Kaupunkiverstaalla kaikki voivat tehdä uniikkia designia – olitpa sitten pienyrittäjä, harrastaja tai muuten vain utelias kokeilemaan uutta asiantuntevan henkilökuntamme avustuksella. Kaupunkiverstas on avoinna maanantaista perjantaihin klo 9-18.

MARGUERITE DURAS

Marguerite Duras (1914–1996) was one of the most widely read French writers of
the postwar era. She authored 34 novels from 1943–1993 and was also the
screenwriter of Alain Resnais´ celebrated film Hiroshima, Mon Amour (1959 -
this film is shown on Sunday in Orion on Sunday 16.3. - 17:30). Disliking
others’ adaptations of her work she began to direct after the rebellious spring
1968 in Europe — 16 films in all. Her work is characterized by its
self-reflexiveness and intertextuality; she often moved one story, or elements
of a story, through genres: novel, film, play — even from film to film. Duras
was born in French Indochina, referring often to her early years there, as also
to the personal events of WW II in Europe and Asia.


THE FILMS

DÉTRUIRE, DIT-ELLE (Destroy, she said 1969) (Wednesday 12.03.2014 19:00; Friday
14.03.2014 18:40 in Orion)
Duras aims to present the characters as something more than clearly defined
individuals. There is no central character but all of them are reflections of
the same kind of fatigueness in the zero point between the history and the
future. One of the characters Max Thor teaches in the school "the history of the
future" which is about "nothing": he doesn´t say anything and the students
sleep. In the interview in the magazine Cahiers du cinéma Duras says that she
tries to find a definition for the gap between despair and hope. He calls it
first the void, but says then that it´s more like a point zero, a neuter, where
there are chances to find a new place, to establish a new kind of order for
sensibility.

AGATHA ET LES LECTURES ILLIMITÉES (1981) Thursday 13.03.2014 19:00; Saturday
15.03.2014 17:00, Orion)
A woman (Bulle Ogier) and a man (Yann Andréa) are two siblings in a milieu of an
Art Deco -hotel at the beach remembering l´amour fou between them and their
childhood summer times. According to Laure Adler, Duras said that this was her
first film about happiness. She wrote Agatha after reading Robert
Musil´s unfinished novel (in three books) The Man Without Qualities (1930–43;
German: Der Mann ohne Eigenschaften), where among other things the incestuous
siblings Ulrich and Agathe talk endlessly. Duras´ own longing for her dead
brother who died very early was also part of the process in making this film.
It is filmed in Trouville, in Hôtel des Roches Noires, where she filmed the
first film of "India-cycle" La femme du Gange (1973).

LES ENFANTS (The Children, 1985) (Tuesday 18.03.2014 17:00 Friday 21.03.2014
19:00, Orion)
Based on the story "Ah! Ernesto". Ernesto has gone to school for the first time.
When he comes home, he goes straight to his mother and says to her: "I'm never
going back to that place !" His mother stops peeling the potato in her hand.
She looks at him. "why?" she asks. "Because!" says Ernesto. "Because at school
they teach me things that I don't know!" "Oh, no!" says his mother, "not
another one!" She sighs and picks up the potato again. Ernesto is played by
adult actor.

NATHALIE GRANGER (1972) (Tuesday 01.04.2014 19:00; Friday 04.04.2014 19:30 in
Orion)
is “a celluloid equivalent of atonal music or free verse” (Time Out). It is shot
at Duras’ own house, where the director creates a cycle of laconic domestic
ritual over the threat of impending doom. Two women (Jeanne Moreau and Lucia
Bosé) share a home with their children. Barely able to contain their
indifference to life, they’re distracted by the expulsion of one child from
school, escaped convicts lurking in the neighborhood, and a bumbling washing
machine salesman (Gérard Depardieu) who keeps pestering them. ("Of Language and
Longing: The Films of Marguerite Duras in Walker Art Centre", 2010)

LE CAMION (1977) (Wednesday 02.04.2014 19:30; Saturday 05.04.2014 17:00, Orion)
The conversation in a dark room between Elle (Duras) and Lui (Gérard Depardieu)
is interspersed with images of life on the highway. Duras and actor Gerard
Depardieu do an on-camera read-through of a movie script. Occasionally, the
director comments about the characters or their motivations, and sometimes the
actor does. That's all -- there is no action, there are no location shots, no
one pretends to be anything else. The script itself tells about an encounter
between a blank-slate of a woman hitchhiker, and a communist truck driver.

SON NOM DE VENISE DANS CALCUTTA DÉSERT (1976) (Tuesday 08.04.2014 18:45;
Saturday 12.04.2014 17:00, Orion)
consists almost entirely of images of the deserted, deteriorating Rothschild
palace near Reims, and uses the soundtrack of another film, India Song (1975).
The decaying Rothschild mansion, the setting for most of India Song, stands now
for any structure that once served as the public image of authoritarian rule.
(...) The dilapidated condition of the mansion even suggests wanton
destruction, leaving us to imagine acts of gratuitous violence committed by
passersby. The effect is that of a body violated. ("Art and politics in Duras'

The FixC cooperative organises together with Yleisradio, Finnish Broadcasting
Company, a festival of teletext-art ITAF Yle. The artworks are broadcasted
20.3. – 22.4.2014. on Finnish teletext pages 525 – 541.

The festival program includes an exhibition of works by Kathrin Günter, the
winner of Teletext Art Prize2013 and a video compilation of ITAF Yle teletext
art works with a soundtrack by Uli Mayr including "Das Atom im Videotextreich"
by Dragan Espenschied's Eurodance band, Bodenständig 2000. The exhibiton takes
place in the brand new FixC cooperative showroom: FISH Helsinki.

The ITAF Yle opening event also celebrates the founding of the world's first and
propably last teletext art museum MUTA (MUseum of Teletext Art). The museum will
show artworks on a regular basis on a permamnet teletext page in Yle Teletext.
In addition the museum will archive the teletext artworks in digital form for
the media archeologists of the future as part of the collection of Finnish
electronic art VILKE.

The teletext art works in ITAF Yle have been previously shown in ITAF2013 in ARD
text, ORF TELETEXT and SWISS TELETEXT. In one month over a million people viewed
the artworks and following the success ITAF2013 was selected in to the program
of Ars Electronica Festival, Linz, Austria, 5.9.-9.9.2013

2. PEKKA HYYTIÄINEN RETROSPEKTIIVI

Elokuvakerho Montaasi järjestää Pekka Hyytiäisen elokuvien retrospektiivin Kino
Tapiolassa 17. ja 24.3.2014. Tapahtuma koostuu kahdesta näytöksestä, joissa
esitetään Hyytiäisen kaikki kolme pitkää elokuvaa sekä runsaasti ennen
näkemätöntä materiaalia hänen uransa varrelta. Hyytiäisen ystävät ja
yhteistyökumppanit tulevat paikalle kertomaan elokuvien tekemisestä.

Hyytiäinen (1950–2008) on suomalaisen elokuvan unohdettu luonnonlahjakkuus ja
yksi niitä harvoja kotimaisia 1970- ja 80-lukujen
independent-elokuvantekijöitä, jotka onnistuivat murtautumaan
harrastajapohjalta valtavirtaan. Hänen omaehtoiset elokuvansa keräsivät
ilmestyessään runsaasti kehuja kriitikoilta, mutteivät saavuttaneet kaupallista
menestystä.

Hyytiäinen toimi 70-luvulla aktiivisesti elokuvakerho Montaasissa. Tehtyään
kerhossa kaksi kunnianhimoista lyhytelokuvaa hän perusti muutaman muun
aktiivijäsenen kanssa Lähikuva Oy -tuotantoyhtiön ja siirtyi tekemään pitkiä
elokuvia. Lähikuvan ensimmäinen tuotanto, jännityselokuva Kirje, valmistui
1978. Sitä seurasi muutamaa vuotta myöhemmin i + i (1981), tinkimättömän synkkä
"elokuva epäonnistumisesta". Hyytiäisen kolmas elokuva, sodan pelkoa käsittelevä
MP – minä pelkään (1982), jäi lopulta hänen viimeisekseen, vaikka tässä
vaiheessa hän oli kiinnittänyt maan merkittävimpien elokuvakriitikoiden
huomion: "Hyytiäinen on taikurimaisella tavalla kääntänyt kaupallisen elokuvan
keinot päälaelleen", kirjoitti Helena Ylänen (HS 27.3.1982), ja Sakari
Toiviainen (IS 26.3.1982) totesi Hyytiäisen olevan "suomalaisessa elokuvassa …
jo nyt oma jäljittelemätön ja korvaamaton ilmiönsä, ulkopuolella leirien ja
muotisuuntausten".

Lyhyen uransa aikana Hyytiäinen ehti kehittyä yhdeksi kotimaisen elokuvan
omintakeisimmista ohjaajista, mutta hänen tuotantonsa huonon saatavuuden vuoksi
hänen osuutensa Suomen elokuvahistoriassa on jäänyt pitkälti huomioimatta.
Hyytiäisen nimi nousi uudelleen esiin syksyllä 2012 Night Visions -festivaalin
yhteydessä pidetyn MP:n 30-vuotisjuhlanäytöksen myötä, mutta hänen muita
elokuviaan ei ole esitetty ensi-iltakierrosten jälkeen. Kohti pimeää: Pekka
Hyytiäisen elokuvat korjaa puutteen tarjoamalla laajan katsauksen Hyytiäisen
tuotantoon.

4. MAYA DERENIN ELOKUVIA

Maya Deren lukeutuu amerikkalaisen kokeellisen elokuvan pioneeriin. Boheemia taitelijaelämää viettänyt Deren toimi myös muun muassa valokuvaajana, tanssijana ja kirjailijana. 

Näytöksessä esitetään seuraavat Derenin lyhytelokuvat:

At Land (1944)
Ritual in Transfigured Time (1946)
The Very Eye of Night (1958)

Näytös kestää noin tunnin.
Elokuvat nähdään 16 mm:ltä filmiltä.

Shine On You, Eevaliisa (2014) on kolmesta fiktiivisestä videoteoksesta muodostuva teoskokonaisuus. Sen innoittajina ovat olleet hiljaisuuden kokemus, pohdinta havainnon merkityksellistämisen tapahtumasta, arkisten toimien yhtäaikainen hauraus, kauneus ja vieraantuneisuus sekä tekijää jatkuvasti koskettava tragikoomisen liikutuksen kokemus.

The Forgotten Space -screening

Screening in Kino Tulio - Kansallinen audiovisuaalinen arkisto, Sörnäisten rantatie 25 A 1, 5. kerros 11.3.2014, 10am.

The sea is forgotten until disaster strikes. But perhaps the biggest seagoing disaster is the global supply chain, which – maybe in a more fundamental way than financial speculation – leads the world economy to the abyss.

The Forgotten Space follows container cargo aboard ships, barges, trains and trucks, listening to workers, engineers, planners, politicians, and those marginalized by the global transport system. We visit displaced farmers and villagers in Holland and Belgium, underpaid truck drivers in Los Angeles, seafarers aboard mega-ships shuttling between Asia and Europe, and factory workers in China, whose low wages are the fragile key to the whole puzzle. And in Bilbao, we discover the most sophisticated expression of the belief that the maritime economy, and the sea itself, is somehow obsolete.

A range of materials is used: descriptive documentary, interviews, archive stills and footage, clips from old movies. The result is an essayistic, visual documentary about one of the most important processes that affects us today. The Forgotten Space is based on Sekula’s Fish Story, seeking to understand and describe the contemporary maritime world in relation to the complex symbolic legacy of the sea.
