Yesterday in AAVE festival´s (http://www.aavefestival.org) Malmitalo screenings we travelled from rural Poland to the landscape of unreal nightmares and dreams. Today we start with a re-run of 3X3D, a film by Peter Greenaway, Jean-Luc Godard and Edgar Pêra.

GREENAWAY, GODARD & PÊRA: 3X3D 2013 / 62 MIN / DCP
SU / SUN 12.4.2015 KLO 13:00 MALMITALO, PIENI SALI

Osat / Segments:
Just in time, ohjaus / directed by Peter Greenaway
Cinesapiens, ohjaus / directed by Edgar Pêra
The Three Disasters (Les Trois Désastres), ohjaus / directed by Jean-Luc Godard
When the Portuguese city of Guimaraes was the culture capital of Europe it invited the directors Jean-Luc Godard, Peter Greenaway and Edgar Pêra to comment on the 2000-year old history of the city. Together their short films became the anthology film 3X3D (2013). On the one hand, the city wanted attention and publicity; on the other hand, the directors they chose were quite iconoclastic. Stereoscopic image often seems to be located between the spectacular and the experimental. If you haven´t seen much experimental stereoscopic moving image, this movie is a good way to start. DAVE BERG:ONNESTA 2014 / 82MIN / DCP
SU / SUN 12.4.2015 KLO 14:30 MALMITALO, PIENI SALI
Dave Berg´s and Elina Reinikka´s independent feature length movie About Happiness (Onnesta) brings out such a fresh burst of energy in the otherwise so sleepy landscape of the new Finnish film, that it is no wonder that so far it has been left quite unrecognized. Pun intended. The movie has been shown mostly in the gallery and festival context. Berg´s use of the agile acting with overwhelming dialogue is combined with sensible mobile camera movements, use of the slow-motion and bold digital effects. The camera is constantly "there", moving rapidly with the actors as somebody who listens their monologues more intensively than their partners, friends and parents. The black tacky liquid coming out from the guts of the woman is maybe the poison of banality of the silenced things from her childhood. The unexplained behaviour of a man is grown from the urge to fill the expectations that the society is supposedly demanding from a man. Berg shows how imaginary these expectations can be and how difficult it can be to appreciate the attraction that has brought the people together at first.  I quote a text that has been written of a different topic but that seems to have something to do with human relations in this work. It is from a critique of the anthology Kosketuksen figuurit (sorry, this is only in Finnish), relating to the philosophical concept of ´the pathic´ and how the emotions are shared by us: "Tullessani itse kosketukseksi ja ´aistin aistiessa´ toisen oma kokemus tulee myös itsen omaksi vaikka joskus jonkin sanoiksi koskaan pukemattoman koskettamattoman jakaminen saattaa olla juuri se syy, miksi juuri tämä toinen on alunperinkään tullut tutuksi. Jos en onnistu olemaan tahdikas ja rajoittamaan empatian ylivuotavaa virtaa, voi raja itsen ja toisen kokemuksen välillä jopa hämärtyä."

ZAPRUDER: ALL INCLUSIVE VS. JOULE
2010 / 98 MIN / DCP
SU / SUN 12.4.2015 KLO 16:30 MALMITALO, PIENI SALI
PLANET STEREOSKOPIA
Zapruder filmmakersgroup: All Inclusive (2010, 75 min)
Zapruder filmmakersgroup: Joule (2010, 23 min)
”What’s your job?” and ”who are you?” are the same question perhaps. They often lead up to the same answer. Topics in All Inclusive are loss and compensation of identity. Work addiction. Cannibalism. Miss Ambra is vowed to the pleasure of sacrifice. She’s so efficient, competitive, needful. Overwhelming.
The ‘joule’ is a unit of work, energy and heat and it is adopted here as a sort of prayer, an exercise in devotion and abandonment. In Joule’s succeeding
frames what is a daily routine becomes a form of worship, liturgy, an expression of economies and tensions, oscillating between the political and the sacred. Joule is part of a ‘double-headed’ project consisting of two complementary and autonomous cores – Joule and All Inclusive; both explore the certain and contradictory relationship between work, giving and sacrifice. The fish is the project’s symbol, a perfect example of a living creature which can eat its own kind, provided they are smaller.
Zapruder filmmakersgroup is an art-film venture, a non-commercial organization engaged in out-of-pocket, low budget, independent moviemaking; founded in 2000 by David Zamagni, Nadia Ranocchi and Monaldo Moretti. The group is named after the ‘sharpshooter’ Abraham Zapruder from Dallas who who caught J.F.K.’s assassination on camera, ‘creating an outstanding example of amateur film, a fetish document, a violation that goes far beyond the private sphere to become a dream, an obsession, part of our collective heritage’. Zapruder has collaborated on stage with Fanny & Alexander company (Ardis I, Ardis II, Villa Venus, Rebus per Ada, Vaniada, Emerald city) and Romeo Castellucci (Purgatorio).

PART 2: WHS THEATRE UNION ON SUNDAY
(PLANET STEREOSKOPIA AND LIVE CINEMA)
WHS TICKETS are 10 e / three shows.

Yesterday in AAVE / WHS we experienced film performance by Natalia Koziel and Petteri Kalliomäki using several projectors and prepared slides, in a charming analogical multi-channel performance using the footage both from a Hollywood musical and a small city in Finland creating a dreamscape space combinining the two. This was followed by a 30 min. participatory happening, created by Helsinki sound-electronics. People were allowed to play the multiple audiovisual instruments created for the occasion. Roberto Pugliese´s digital projection piece with electronic sound was a powerful work on the existence general as being a temporary ghost on this planet. We thank the performers and our audience!

Today´s evening starts with a film-based work HATE, shown as digital projection. Sami van Ingen´s work belongs to PLANET STEREOSKOPIA -series, but this time you don´t need the classes to experience the 3D-effect. With it we return also to our 2013 festival, where we showed it as a 35mm film copy as the opening piece. A couple of weeks ago van Ingen performed his film performance Primaries in WHS (also shown in AAVE 2013), so it seemed to be a right time to screen HATE in WHS.

In 1959, Soviet film director Aleksandr Ptushko (1900 - 1973) directed a feature film titled Sampo, which was loosely based on the Finnish national epic Kalevala. Sampo was partly filmed with two cameras simultaneously. In the film Hate a stereoscopic image is appropriated from Sampo to form a happening between two different perspectives and intended to play with the possibility of exposing the hidden landscape of the mythical Kalevala. The implications of portraying the repressed “Other” in Ptushko´s depiction of Kalevala is also exposed. The stroboscopic effect of the film contrasts with the pictorial content that follows traditional narrative lines: the abduction of the fair maiden, the events lead to a disgraced and defensive suitor, who, once defeated, exits the set sulking.

After the screening we will have a short discussion, and then we return to the theatre to watch Anna Estarriola´s Live Cinema -performance Ventriloquized. The evening will end with a concert by Elena´s Idea, an amazing new band.

ANNA ESTARRIOLA: VENTRILOQUIZED
SU / SUN 12.4.2015 KLO 20:30 WHS TEATTERI UNION

Borrowing the esthetics of a ventriloquist show, Anna Estarriola and a representation of her, together perform an existential duet that speculates about perception and the side effects of being under pressure. The piece involves visual illusions, text and physical movement. Through the interaction with humanized objects and chameleonic creatures, the performer creates a dialogue on common human concerns.

Anna Estarriola (b. 1980) is a Catalan visual artist living and working in Helsinki since 2004. In addition, she has done studies on contemporary dance in Barcelona and Helsinki. Estarriola is interested in intuitively envisaged exchanges between visual arts with other disciplines, such as performing arts and technology. She has created still and dynamic media installations which combine sculpture and moving image with acting, dancing, and dramaturgy. She has also directed dance performances and short film projects. The themes of her work revolve around interpretations on individual and collective behavior, perception of reality, emotions, and
communication.

We have also been performing live at venues such as Koko teatteri, Ravintola Kirja, Svenska Klubben, and Villa Lill-Kallvik. So far the reception has been very warm and enthusiastic."
