AAVE – ALTERNATIVE AUDIOVISUAL EVENT 11. – 14.4.2013

"“The more enlightened our houses are, the more their walls ooze ghosts” -Italo
Calvino." -Italo Calvino

The fourth international festival of moving image AAVE ("ghost") will be held on
11.-14.4.2013. The main venue will take place in cultural centre Malmitalo
(Ala-Malmin tori 1, Helsinki.) Our vision is to challenge the boundaries of
conventional festivals by bringing out the different mediums of moving image
from the early techniques to the most recent digital image formats. This year
an important focus is placed on the film-based performances.

LIVE CINEMA
Our main guest Bruce McClure (US) uses modificated 16mm-film projectors allowing
the noise of the film to form carefully planned rhythms – the absolute music of
light and sound. Sami van Ingen will have a film performance "Primaries" which
will be presented with a soundscape played live by musicians Petri Kuljuntausta
and Henri Lindström. He is utilizing two modified 35mm film projectors, clear
film, opaque film and three bottles of ink. The images are created by scraping,
coloring and dissolving the film surface before the looped filmstrip goes back
into the projector. In the dialogical presentation of Marek Pluciennik
(PL/CA/FI) and musician James Andean (CA/FI) 16mm film is treated by melting,
burning and methods of digital manipulation.

The multidisciplinary programme of our festival is also represented by the dance
and music performance Sugar by the group Liquid. The group is formed by dancers
Terhi Vaimala and Giorgio Converito (IT/FI) and musicians Libero Mureddu
(IT/FI) and Moritz Cartheuser (DE/FI). Their performance is accompanied with
the performative live-video by Pluciennik.

The live-performance "Valotuksia / Exposures" by Tuomo Rainio studies how the
digital image and imagery in itself can be in a continuous state of becoming.
The festival opening performance will be held by photographer and media artist
Hannu Karjalainen with his folktronic music project, which also includes moving
image.

OISHII -JAPANESE ART HOUSE
In our Oishii –film series we screen three Japanese art house feature titles,
which strongly display its directors personal character. This year the films
are Shinya Tsukamoto´s "Gemini" (1999), Koji Wakamatsu´s film about the final
days of the writer Yukio Mishima "11/25 The Day Mishima Chose His Own
Fate"(2012) and Jon Ichikawa´s minimal "Toni Takitani" (2004).

EN GARDE 1! OLD SCHOOL ANALOG VIDEO ART
En Garde! –series includes three screening programmes. This year, 50 years have
passed since the exceptional exhibition by Nam June Paik which initiated video
art to settle into its own form of art. We celebrate the 50-year annual of
video art by screening three old school –titles from the era of analog videos,
showing works by Woody Vasulka (CZ/US), Steina (IS/US) and scratch video
group Gorilla Tapes (GB).

EN GARDE 2 - NEW FILM AND VIDEO ART
In the opening we present Sami van Ingen´s "Hate", a 12 minute long
experimental stereoscopic film, which takes as its starting point the image
material from the Finnish-Soviet coproduction feature film "Sampo" (1959). In
Frieze Film -screening we showcase moving image works commissioned by Frieze
Foundation (organiser of Frieze Art Fair), among which is a work by Thai
director Apichatpong Weerasethakul and Elizabeth Price (GB), the winner of
Turner price 2012. Weerasethakul´s film is made into "a blessing", being rooted
in Thai tradition of playing "a king´s hymn" before every screening. The third
En Garde! – screening displays three visionary single take titles from the
fields of short films and video art from Mihaly Iványi´s "Wind", the winner of
Palme d´Or in 1996 to Daniel Kötter´s (DE) impressive 43-minute long "Neues
Theater", which reflects the post-communist changes in the public and cultural
spaces in Poland. Virvatulet ’13 ("Ghost Lights ´13") presents a selection of
titles that have been under distribution of the finnish media art distribution
centre AV-arkki in the past year.
